Twitter Search is Still Broken - Even with New Front Page Design!

UPDATE: July 2 29, 2009

Today Twitter launched a new home page with a big focus on Search. This move firms up their strategy to become a real-time search engine and put’s them even more in the acquisition cross hairs of Google and Microsoft. Yahoo is out of the game with their Microsoft Bing deal, also announced today.

The main issue I have found is that Twittter Search is still Broken!

Here are sample searches for a number of events that we had our guests tag with a unique identifier “#eventname”, so members could search for Tweets from the event at a later date. As you will see there are a ton of missing results. A lot of people put effort into making posts at the below events and they all should write to Twitter and tell them to fix this mess.

UPDATE: Scoble says search is broken on Twitter. No data loss. I verified by using some analytics tools. Good news. Now if Twitter would just fix search!

Twitter Search Results Today for #seawineawards Since 2009-05-03

Today I searched for the official hashtag for the event #seawineawards with a date set on Twitter Advanced Search: Realtime results for #seawineawards since 2009-05-03. The results pages only list 2 recent mentions. A week after the event on June 22nd at 9:59pm I performed the same search and saved 458+ Mentions to an event summary Word Doc.

A few weeks ago for my event report I performed a the same search. Then to save the data I cut and pasted hundreds of results. The list is below this report.

SUMMARY:

There are a number of ramifications due to Twitters data loss.

In the future I believe that Twitter search results and other social media statistics / analytics will become a huge selling point required by all event sponsorships. Events producers, such as the Seattle Wine Awards must deliver the standard traditional event sponsorship benefits such as logo branding on all event media, website, etc.

Real Time Events create media such as photos and videos in addition to mentions on Twitter and other social media services such as Facebook. Thus, sponsors will evaluate sponsorship opportunities based on these analytics. When Twitter and other social media services loose data as they apparently have with the Seattle Wine Awards, there will be a huge loss in potential revenue for the conference producer.

Companies should look for solutions for social media data backups, just like you would for any other corporate data. Social media companies need to set up some sort of independent, 3rd party, data backup service, that provides a service to provide the social media networks with a way to re-populate lost data.

As an additional backup, companies should use tools to back up their social media data to their own archives to guarantee that they have a backup in house.

Proof of Twitter Data Loss

A week after the event I performed a Twitter Search for #seawineawards and manually cut and paste the data to an event overview report. I am glad I did and hope that this blog article inspires a conversation about the topic as many other companies likely have also been effected by Twitter’s data loss.  Perhaps, I am doing something wrong for my new advanced Twitter Search for #seattlewineawards ?  I hope this is the case because a large amount of Tweets mentioning and promoting Washington Wineries is now lost. The Seattle Wine Awards was a huge undertaking by a very small team to promote Washington State Wineries and the event only happens once per year.

GOOGLE SEARCH FOR #SEAWINEAWARDS

Here is a Google Search for #seattlewineawards. As you can see, Google has indexed about 77 entries with #seawineawards , where as Twitter currently lists only 2 results! What is interesting is that you can click on the results and many do show up in Twitter, yet they do not show up in the #seawineawards Twitter Search Results.
